The Energy Exchange today announced that the second annual Iraq 2011: Future Energy conference will be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from 26–29 September 2011.
The event will witness leading industry experts and decision makers unveil the significant investment opportunities in Iraq’s oil and gas, power, electricity and its related infrastructure sectors. Sidharth Mehta, Senior Project Manager, The Energy Exchange, said: “The oil and gas, power, and electricity infrastructure sectors of Iraq have been struggling for several years now. An average of 6 hours of electricity is received daily, causing significant problems, especially during summer. The Ministry of Electricity needs to raise US$29 billion between 2015 and 2030 to meet their strategic plans. The four-day Iraq 2011: Future Energy summit will provide the ideal platform to network and learn about the profitable opportunities arising out of this in Iraq.” Iraq 2011: Future Energy will see industry professionals analysing Iraq’s power sector and providing an overview of investments required by its Ministry of Electricity. The importance of private sector participation and the rules and regulations of Iraq’s Independent Power Project (IPP) will also be outlined, as will the problems and opportunities in Iraq’s national electricity transmission grid. Subsequent days will examine the challenges Iraq faces over the next decade to meet its energy needs. The Iraqi Oil Ministry recently announced it will hold its fourth bidding round on 25 or 26 January next year, and has scheduled a road show with foreign oil companies for 11 September, despite a proposal in Iraq’s Parliament to suspend new oil and gas deals. Those prospective deals have met resistance from the Parliament’s Oil and Energy Committee, as the committee’s Chairman, Adnan Al Janabi, proposed a law that would suspend all new oil and gas deals until a long-delayed hydrocarbon legislation can be passed. The second day of the conference will have speakers clarify the political and energy situation in Iraq, along with investment opportunities and action plans for downstream projects. In addition, the case to regulate the upstream petroleum sector will be presented, as well as the necessity of mandatory benchmarks in order to maximize success in upstream activities in the oil and gas sector. Industry experts will discuss gas flaring and structure a plan to reach zero flaring in Iraq. To conclude the day a spirited debate will focus on the Draft Federal Oil and Gas Law and the need for strict revision and new premises. H.E. Adnan Al Janabi, Chairman, Oil and Energy Committee, Iraq Parliament, in an interview with The Energy Exchange on Iraq 2011: Future Energy, said: “The most important thing for the oil sector is restructuring, part of which includes reinstituting the Iraq National Oil Company and having a Federal Oil and Gas Law in place. For the country as a whole the constitutional requirement is to implement article 106 - the Revenue Sharing Law - and this cannot be completed without restructuring the oil sector.” “Once the Federal Oil and Gas Law is in place, the Federal Oil and Gas Council (FOGC) should be formed to set the framework for bidding rounds and other things,” he continued. H.E. Adnan Al Janabi will be addressing Iraq 2011: Future Energy on 27 September 2011. A holistic view of all necessary requirements to proceed further in developing a stable energy future for Iraq will be the topic of discussion on day three of the conference. The importance of security, physical and financial infrastructure, and the technologies to provide a concrete foundation will be emphasized by a variety of distinguished speakers. Furthermore, a panel of world-renowned industry experts will showcase Iraq’s position vis-à-vis the rest of the world, specifically focusing on the oil and gas sector and the issues that affect foreign investment. The final day of Iraq 2011: Future Energy will consist of a focus day on Kurdistan. Details from Kurdistan’s energy sector will be highlighted, along with outlining how to build an efficient energy infrastructure through the utilization of the latest technologies to ensure the growth and prosperity of Kurdistan. Also, visitors will be informed about the various security improvements that can be used to safeguard these future developments, leading to a safer and productive Kurdistan. Participating at Iraq 2011: Future Energy will be Iraqi government officials, leading oil, gas, power and electricity companies, and security and resource specialists.
